"Oceans Apart From The Competition!" -Frank Ocean Live From Terminal 5

Okay so about a month ago I copped these Frank Ocean tickets with the foresight on knowing that his album was on the way, he was trending at the moment, AND that the show would be SOLD OUT due to his rising popularity.  What I DIDN'T know (and the entire general public for that matter) at the time was that he was about to out himself to the world. Ocean was making WAVES! Not that this changed anything, but it changed EVERYTHING! Support grew, fan base expanded, shows became sold out. However what didn't change, was the purity in his music. I'm a BIG fan of live music, I'm an even bigger fan if the artist I'm seeing is a GREAT one. Frank is NOT great, but he's on his way...patience. So last night I get to Terminal 5 (the concert) venue at 7:15 for a "doors open at 7:00" show only to be greeted by a "Micheal Jackson funeral" long ass line. F**K!!! It's a huge space so I knew once doors opening the length would vanish quickly. As longs as it wasn't raining I was cool. Especially being that I like to people watch anyway, it worked out for me. Got say, that was the BEST LOOKING crowd gathering I've ever seen to attend a concert! A lot of downtown SOHO P.Y.T.'s, a bunch of fashionable "he could or he could not be gay" looking dudes, a mixture of mixed couples, and a TON of white folks! Who looked like they came out cause Tumblr blogs say he's the NEW cool black dude next to Drake, 'Ye, and A$AP Rocky. LOL! Now about the show...I had a couple of problems with it but otherwise it was kinda DOPE! Beside the ANNOYING big chick singing EVERY FREAKIN' lyric LOUDLY in my ear w/ a "YES Frank!" here and there, and the tallest dude in the whole concert that decides to stand in front of me, here are my tangible gripes. For one the band wasn't THAT good. Oh they could play, just not their asses off (no homo) like I've heard other bands play live behind (no homo) other artist. Second thing is, Frank please STOP IT with announcing each and every song you're about to perform man! Trust that you're fans KNOW the tracks and will get hyped once they heard the opening chords of WHATEVER it is you're about to do. SHEESH! It was like a live listening party for the album..."This next song I'm about to do is..." Come 'on dude! And BTW change the opening song. I appreciate the Sade cover but my advice would be to come out to the "No Church In The Wild" track. Not that would've been AWESOME! But ya boy sings the hook on the lesser known one he's on on Watch The Throne...WHO does that? Not mad, but I'm just sayin'.  Now the stuff that rocked was that the crowd was on 10 the ENTIRE show! And his VOICE was just as pure live as expected to be, which is rare in these auto-tune/lip-sync times we live in. Dope! Well that's my review for now, I had plans to bring you back some flicks but they made me check my Canon, so I did you one BETTER, and recorded my favorite song performed. I'm in a giving mood so here...ENJOY bitches (Rick James voice)!

"Black Excellence, Truly Yours" -Producer S1 Creates "Throne Motivation" Music

EVERY time I think of our (the Block Boys + the Journ3y Men) "Prim & Proper" dinner parties, this particular song comes to mind. If you've "studied" the album like many of us have, you'll remember it's the second half of the two part song "Murder to Excellence" (produced by S1) off the Watch the Throne album . Well anyways, here a lil' informative video clip of said producer explaining the motivation behind the track's sound and how it landed on the track listing for Jay & Ye's collaborative album.

Okay you got the "Watch The Throne" album (both the download AND the CD versions) correct? You copped those "WTT" tix the second they came on-line right? "What More Can I Say? We Killin' Em" - "OTIS" Video Now Up For Your Veiwing

I honestly think this is the first video were Jay-Z wasn't taking himself so seriously! He looks like he's actually having ummm FUN! Hearing the song, I never thought to myself "what would the video treatment be?" Besides that the song is pretty short. But I'm not mad at this AT ALL! I'm sure the video will get as many hits as the song as been getting spins in the club, the radio, on yo iPod, etc. and so on. Enjoy!

"Thought I'd Remind Ya!"-Watch The Throne Album Review, H.A.M Sandwich!

I decided I'll review the album from a different per-
spective this time around track for track with my favorite line(s) that are winners. Why? Cause quite frankly the $#it is DOPE! So if you was looking for a co-sign...GO COP IT! BONG! Review done. So now can I move on to the lyrics cause honestly this is what were here for huh? Right? Have a seat, put the kids to sleep and let's commence the review shall we?

"OTIS" -Safe to say this is the song of the summer ! Sorry Drake ("I'm On One"). When you hear the whole album in it's entirety
you'll completely understand why this made it as the first single. My favorite lines: Jay-Z - "...Looking like wealth, I'm about to call the paparazzi on myself..." Kanye-"I wrote Jesus Walks I'm never going to Hell.." or "...Sophisticated ignorance I write my curses in cursive..."

"GOTTA HAVE IT" -Hypnotic track that I just couldn't get past! TOO SHORT if you ask me, and I'm not talking bout the rapper either! How can you hate on a track where Kanye shouts out Nostrand Ave? Jay-Z & Kanye - "Ni**gas hate ballers these days, ain't that like LeBron James? Ain't that just like D-Wade?" and "I wish I could give you the feeling, I'm planking on a million..."

"ILLEST MOTHERF**KER ALIVE!" - A corny line like "...Staples in my dick cause I f**k so many centerfolds" only Kanye could make that work. Even HE laughs at the end of that line! "F**k your awards like Eddie Murphy's couch!" is Jay-Z's input I'm digging on this one.

"LIFT OFF!" -Not much rapping on this one so the winner by default is "Earth is boring too, $#it is making my dick soft" from Jay-Z LOVE the track ending after the countdown!

"MADE IN AMERICA" - 'Ye spits -"This ain't no fashion show, we LIVE it!' & "I'm rapping on them beats they was suppose to buy. I guess I'm getting high on my own supply" and Jay-Z retorts back "Our apple pie was supplied by Arm & Hammer..." and "No papa, Bad Santa, the streets raised me pardon my bad manners..." rounds out the few lines I like on this one.

"Murder To Excellence" - Jay -Z goes -"I'm giving you respect you I expect the same thing..." plus "I'm out here celebrating my post demise" & Kanye says- "Shop class, EVERYONE got a tool" & "Time for us to redefine Black Power. 41 black souls killed in an hour." is his contribution to the "Murder" half of this song. On "Excellence" Jay goes in saying "No cheap colonge, whenever I shhhttt shhhhttt, success never smell so sweet!" "Domino! Domino! Only SPOT a few blacks the higher I go.." DOPE! Mr. West comes back with "When you picture events called black ties, what's the last thing you expect to see? Black guys!" NICE!

"NEW DAY!" - This track sounds real Dilla-ish to me for some reason. Kanye spits a zinger stab at Amber Rose with lines like "...And I never ever let 'em hit a strip club, I learn the hard way that's not a place to find love" Jay-Z tells his future seeds "Sorry junior, I already ruined ya, you ain't even alive paparazzi pursuing ya.." Deep ish fellas!

"NI**AS IN PARIS" - LOVE the sample line "I don't know WHAT that even means! No one knows what it means, but it's provocative?" But the winner her lyrically are Jay's line "If you escaped like I escape you'd be in Paris getting f**ked up too!" 'Ye replies "Bougie girl grab her hand, F**K the bitch she don't wanna dance. Excuse my French but I'm in France!"

"NO CHURCH IN THE WILD!" -I need a remix w/ just Frank Ocean on this one! Fa real! But "Think about the girl in all leopard, who was rubbing the wood Kiki Shepard!" And "We formed a NEW religion no sins if there's permission..." Kanye says convincingly!

"PRIMETIME" -Lines like "NEW money I found the fountain of youth!" "DAMN Yeezy why they all gotta be dimes? Adam gave up a rib, so mine better be prime!" are arrogance at its BEST!

"WHO GON STOP ME?" -"You heard Yezzy was racist? Will I guess it's somewhat basis, I only like green faces...", "I went through Hell I'm expecting Heaven!" are sure to be SOMEBODY'S Facebook status soon I see it now!

"WHY I LOVE YOU" - Jay-Z goes H.A.M w/ "F**K you squares that why the circle got smaller!", "I'm I my brother's keeper? As long as a ni**ga don't creep up!" "Me or the money, what are you loyal to?" are the stand outs on this track. But it honestly fire all the ways through.

Too bad Soul Train is no longer on I would've LOVED to see these two on Sat morning w/ Don C. performing these tracks "live"

"Drop A Bomb To That" -New Hovie & Yeezy "OTIS" Watch The Throne Single Is Out!

Just yesterday I posted a sarcastic rant about how these two cats had fans holding there breath waiting in vain like (Bob) Marley for them to drop SOMETHING sonically from their highly anticipated collabo release "Watch The Throne" (not to be confused with "Game of Thrones" on HBO). And low and behold I hear this track "OTIS" (produced by K.West) that has them going back and forth lyrically like an Olympic level ping pong match...Chinese players of course! Listening to it I can't help but think of that Kanye line from "Touch The Sky" where Ye says "Jay's favorite line: Dog, in due time. Now he look at me, like, Damn dog, you where I am!" And look he's made a whole album rapping along side his idol! Now THAT'S a MF'ing come up If I saw one, right?!? BTW peep the screaming at the end of the song, I'd sware it's Kanye SO excited that this is FINALLY happening! LOL

"OTIS"-Jay-Z & Kanye West

"Top Of The World Baby!" -the Block Association's 2nd Anniversary / July 4th Roof Top BBQ Jump-Off Extravaganza!!!

I'm not here to rub stuff in yo face, but if you DIDN'T make it upstairs to our very first roof top party for or 2nd Anniversary then let me tell you man, YOU BLEW IT!!! It was EVERYTHING folks expected to be but little did folks know it was the party that almost wasn't! True story, gather round kids and listen closely. Ok a while back before July even came round L.A. (Lyshaan Hall), Ngozi (Odita), DJ Trauma, and I were all scouting for spaces in Brooklyn to host our 2nd Annual July 4th anniversary party but was coming up short. To the rescue comes Patty Laurent that put me on to a rooftop space in the city (Rare View) that I attended a while ago and struck up a deal w/ management to book that Monday the 4th. But was told "Urban" (IE "black") parties were kinda frowned upon here, but he was willing to give us a try. However phone call after phone call, meeting after meeting, dude was giving me the "hide and seek, duck duck goose" routine and the clock was ticking! So by divine chance I happen to come across a vague e-mail from an associate suggesting I contact her for a possible lucrative venture. And low and behold a client of hers (she does hair btw) owned a FREAKIN' ROOF TOP! SWEET! You do see where this is going right? Ok so BONG! We meet and agree to collabo on the night to ensure all our people have the most memorable holiday possible and within a few days left till the 4th "Touch the Sky" was ON AND POPPIN'! However due to the fact that we were sharing the space AND the building was occupied with tenants now, the invite was to be PRIVATE! But thanks to the good ol' Internet, Facebook, word of mouth buzz, etc. It got NUTSZILLA! So if I didn't see you, I'm glad you came...BEST ONE YET!!!!

"Ocean's Away!" -Frank Ocean Get Ultra Nostalgic

Now wait before you start thinking "Dude you're JUST now hearing about him?" Pause. I waited purposely to post about my latest musical obsession Frank Ocean's "Nostalgia/Ultra" because I didn't wanna appear like I was jumping bandwagons due to his Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them ALL (or Odd Future or better yet OFWGKTA) association. But after a GOOD solid week of soaking in each and every track...cat daddy is the TRUTH! Why? Not only are is choices of cover/samples outside the box, the LYRICS are oceanic deep. Not your usual R&B (Rap & Bulls**t) fare about ass chasing, and couch surfing in the clubs wasted off of X amount of bottles you and your team popped! Ocean actually takes the time to poetically paint abstract pictures with words to tell stories that are relate able. "American Wedding", "There Will Be Tears", & "Strawberry Swing" are the finest examples of this. Though the music is not original his TAKE approach to them are. On first listen to those that have "musical deficiency" you'd think the track we're customized like the BMW on the "virtual" cover of this mixtape. Nah! Coldplay, MGMT, and Mr. Hudson all lend tunes to Frank's intro into "the Machine" aka the industry. Gotta say, it's the BEST mixtape I've experience I had in a while since Drake's "So Far Gone" release a ways back. And speaking Drake (BTW Kanye too) don't be shocked if you hear one of this guys donating a verse or two to his stuff in the future. Beyonce's ALREADY working with dude! Get up! Listen, if you plan to jump into Ocean's music you better know how to "Swim Good!" Download it HERE!

"Turn The Lights ON!"-Kanye, Rihanna, Cudi, & Hype Walk Into A Bar...

Let it be know that I am NOT, I repeat NOT a "hater!" LOVE Hype on the visuals! LOVE Kanye on the music tip! But MAN I'm I disappoint on their latest collabo dude! The intro had my mildly interested, but when the video turns into a Flash ad for computer fonts I checked out mentally son. Like on some "get my hat and coat outta coat check" type gone! But hey that's JUST me. I'll play fair and still post it even though it not up to snuff with their previous hotness of videos past. P.S. Rihanna put a damn shirt on! There's kids in the video girl! You gon catch a nasty chest cold! Again, NO hater I'm I (Prez. Nixon voice)!

***POST UPDATE***
Looks like Hype Williams may have a court date coming up cause it looks like some creative ideas were jacked from Gaspar Noe's video "Enter the Void" see for yourself below!

These dudes better "lawyer up" man! Or it's LIGHTS OUT fo' real!

"Buried Alive, With Snow Way Out!" -the White Out In NYC

Help me understand WHY for three FREAKIN' days has there been a bus and countless other cars stranded on my block! This is NOT the first or the LAST snow storm NYC has seen, so WHY is the clean up the worst? I admit it was exciting to see it for a day or so, (it felt like I was living on a movie set) but ummm enough is enough Bloomie! I had to stop and take a pick of this s#@t here to convey the view from my window. In the great words of Kanye "I'm so applauded!"

"Behind The Dark Fantasy" - Kanye Samples...

After some (not so extensive) research, I successfully tracked down two of the original sampled songs Mr. West has tapped into for this latest 5 star reviewed album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" The songs "Devil In A New Dress" and "Lost In The World" are in my top five cuts and I wanted to share with you the sources that he (and his production entourage) got'em from. Enjoy!

"Welcome To (My Beautiful Dark Twisted) Fantasy Island!" -Kanye "Beautiful" Review

Yeah even though it was floating around on the internet for some weeks now. I thought I would at least play fair to others by waiting till it was being "officially" released (Tues. Nov. 22nd to be exact). "It" being Kanye's fifth studio album aptly titled "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" Which all of those things at once. Dark, twisted, but all and all beautiful! Why? Well for one lyrically 'YE stepped his rap game up to the tenth "POWER" (yes, pun intended) which finally matches his production quality. Thumbs up & funny face Kanye style. However you'll still hear some of the bitterness towards women left over from the "808 & Heartbreak" album, but at least here he's being a bit more artistic about it. and rapping again, abandoning the short lived auto-tune fad (Thank you Jay-Z). Ok we all know that he DOES have help in the writing dept. (sans Pusha T, Consequence, etc.) yet he rhythms with such conviction that you'll almost believe he pull out and iPad and wrote it all himself. Man whateva! He's fighting for his spot to be placed among the greats and THIS one may just put him right there. I'm feeling this one top to bottom, like how I felt about "Late Registration" release. NO fast forwarding allowed. Let me break down the album track for track on what I feel will be his what...third classic album I think? Ready?

"POWER"-Straight workout! It's the Hip Hop version of the Rocky theme if there ever was on. The choir background, the handclaps, the guitar riffs, and the character self-referencing sample of "21st century schizoid man"...POWER-ful!

"Monster" (Feat. Rick Ross, Jay-Z, & Nicki Minaj)- Heard this one a while ago, and still feel it when DJs throw it on. Let's be honest, it's REALLY Nicki Minaj's record and Kanye, Ross & Jay are the guest star but this one's a BEAST!

"So Appalled" (Feat. Jay-Z, Swizz Beats, Pusha T, Rza, & Prynce Cy Hi) - Another one I heard way back in it's really raw form and loved it! The Rza part...eh? I could have done without, but one bad apple does not spoil the bunch. And Pusha T's verse was a bit "cut & pasty" with the drug talk but hey, that's YA MAN!

"Devil In A New Dress"
(Feat. Rick Ross) -By far one of my favorite track off the album & Kanye records for me personally! The haunting Smokey Robinson sample, the piano break, the edgy guitar over dubs give me an "eargasm" EVERY time I play this one. This track reminds me of vintage 'Ye stuff, when he was re-popularizing old soul samples. I think that's...wait...I KNOW that's why I'm loving this one so much! I'd download...ummm, I meant I'd purchase the whole CD just for this one song. Even if I thought the whole album was wack! The song is GREAT as a stand alone song by itself, even though Ricky's verse is HOT, it still sounds to me like the record was completed already, and that was JUST added on last min to "remix" it for consumers to entice them to still cope the "newer" version.

"All of the Lights" (interlude) & "All Of The Lights" (Feat. Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Fergie, The-Dream, Ryan Leslie, Elton John, Charlie Wilson, Kid Cudi, Tony Williams, & Elly Jackson)
Yet another fist pumper following "POWER" this too has that same empowering sound to it, I like to call it "stadium music". I first heard this one being featured in the long form video he released for "Runaway" and instantly know this record would be HUGE! Then when I finally gt the chance to really sit down and closely examine the track I was like "Hold up, the lyrics have NOTHING to do with the hook!?!" Peep how he talking about domestic abuse on this and then listen to the chorus. the two don't even coincide with one another. Even the line about MJ has nothing to do with the rest of the SAME verse either! I'm not hating on it I'm just bringing it to your attention, cause I know your a smart consumer like me. That's all.

"Runaway" (Feat. Pusha T) -To be honest, this one I didn't dig at first. I mean it was cool and all but it's sounds like a 808 track he never completed till he revisited the track for this new album. It's not your usual club banger, but TRY NOT singing along when this comes on in the club. You're probaby the one without the drink in your hand to toast too. LOL! BTW, I like the extended version way better!

"Hell Of A Life" -I call this one "Rockstar Rap". Very dark, but upbeat at the same time. On this track he's reflection of love coming via a pornstar and what all that would entail. Ya know the ol' "hoe into a housewife" story. Interesting but DEFINITELY an album cut NEVER a single. Just due to the subject matter. It's room temperature but not that Project apartment HEAT!

"Blame Game" (Feat. John Legend & Chris Rock) -Probably the saddest and in another turn funnest rap record I've ever heard. Strange right? This one is about verbal abuse this time, which is ANOTHER leftover 808 theme. The lyrics hit home for althose that's been in a Rocky (as in the fighter & shaky) relationship, that's the sad half. Then the over heard phone convo featuring Rock is where the humor comes in at. Dope dope dope song! Grammy worthy even.

"Gorgeous" (Feat. Kid Cudi) - the hook goes;

"Ain’t no question if I want it, I need it
I can feel it slowly drifting away from me
I’m on the edge, so why you playing? I’m saying
I will never ever let you live this down, down, down

Not for nothing I’ve foreseen it, I dream it
I can feel it slowly dripping away from me
No more chances if you blow this, you bogus
I will never ever let you live this down, down, down"

Which is like something Kanye would say to himself in the mirror every morning (after "Wake up Mr. West" of course). I think he spits his hottest lyric yet on this on by far to me. I can see this being release as a late single after alll the hype of the stronger tracks have died down.

"Dark Fantasy" (Feat. Nicki Minaj intro) -Now THIS the track Rza did NOT the "So Appalled" track he's featured on, like everyone thought he produced. And you can sorta tell for that Wu-Tang style bounce sound that it has. But truth be told the highlight of the song is the catchy hook (that I can't seem to get outta my head) which asks the eternally burning question "Can we get much higher?" S#*t I hope so! This s*@t here is CRACK!

"Lost In The World /Who Will Suvive In America?" (Feat. Bon Iver & Gil Scott-Heron) GREAT way to finis off the album. It seems like a song that you play when the credits of a movie are rolling. LOVE the intro into the cut. Niice ending to a CLASSIC (Yes I'm claiming it is) album.

Here's all FIVE album covers to collect if you're into that sorta thing.

Here a link to listen to a soon to be released mixtape I added for good measure too. LISTEN

"Flashing Lights" -Paparazzi Pics (Pt.232)

Last week it had to have been a million plus parties going on celebrating the Halloween holiday, but NONE can boast that they had Nicki Minji, Diddy, Janelle Monae, Rick Ross, Jay-Z & Beyonce', T.I., Lil' Wanye, Kanye, & Snoop, all in attendance at the SAME party! NONE! Except the 2nd annual Monsters Ball event that the Brooklyn Circus & the Block Association presented, that has become legendary in just TWO years! No lie folks, by 11:30 Saturday night No.1 Front St. was at capacity which made getting in even tougher for people who didn't believe us when we said "EARLY arrival HIGHLY suggested!" The line spread down the block as if those celebs I named were ACTUALLY there for real! Folks that braved the cold and finally got in, was rewarded to one of THEE hottest parties thrown this year by far! Seriously, it was just that DOPE! The costumes, the energy, the music...man the MUSIC! Goldfinger, Trauma, Jasmine Solano, DJ Pot, and Free like Frei set the bar high LAST year, so this year it was raised even higher. At one point in the party when "Hello, Good morning" came on, the look-a-likes all played their parts acting out the song to a tee. Folks swore it was part of the show but nah, it's just what happens at a "Block (Association) party" ya'll. Memorable! Well thank you once AGAIN for helping us put Brooklyn on the map as a destination to party for Halloween this year. We love for that. Also please join us THIS FRIDAY at Room Service to witness Goldfinger & Trauma tear it down AGAIN for (Sean John) Supermodel Miguel Perdomo's B'day party hosted by Knicks Raymond Felton. Then Sat. Nov. 20th "Flashing Lights Pt.2" (Private penthouse photo shoot party/ SheisNYC anniversary) Yerrrr! Get at me dog! theMreport@gmail.com
