"Put A Cap In That Ass!" -Capsule Trade Show Fall '08

If fashion is your passion, then love was in the air Monday and Tuesday, at the Capsule trade show yearly hosted by Brand Pimps. Quite a few first time show-ers had a lot to say design wise. For me the footwear was the highlight of the show, a good hand full of brands "stepped it up." Here's all that I saw that caught my eye (that I was allowed to flick)

"Make It Rain On 'Em" -"Paisley" In the Park

"Let's go crazy, let's get nuts..." Sounds like something two rebellious teenage squirrels would say right? Well, we all (should) know where that line is from. If you said "Purple Rain" (big ass clue pictured) then you are one of the smart ones that know pop culture. If you're NEVER seen Purple Rain then you need to go purify your heathen self in the waters of Lake Minnetonka asap. Or redeem yourself by attending a free showing tomorrow at Pier 54. Dig if you will this picture.

RiverFlicks for Grown-ups presents
Purple Rain
Wed, July 23rd
Hudson River Pier 54 (near W. 14th St.)
8:30pm-till
Free admission & popcorn
Other snacks are on sale.

"One Long Knight"-Dark Knight Review...Sorta.

"Everbody on the line outside..." -Flipmode Squad

If you've been following the blog for sometime, you should not be shocked that I've gone to see the movie on the first day out. No trickery or advance tickets involved, I just simply brought my tickets at an earlier time & day before it came out (duh?). So don't walk in there even thinking you're gonna see the 9:10 movie and it's 8:59 on you tick tock. Hell nah! It ain't happening captain. Anyways, I show up to the theater w/ my ticket in hand and simply walk inside, not even noticing there was a line formed (from 7:00 for a 9:40 showing) outside. Ash points this out, but we're inside already, so am I to head back out to join that said line? As the French would say "F^#% No!" Excuse my French. Once upstairs, we see there's NO listing for our movie time. Huh? What the deuce? Never fear though, the acne-challenged usher just tell us it's slightly later and to start the line, we're first. Cool. Soon after, the poor saps that we're there from 7pm get the green light to come up and join the line we're on. Cool. Amid the mass showing movie conflictions, lines were being formed ALL over the damn lobby, so we get moved to ANOTHER wall to wait by. Cool. So we resume our position in first place on THAT line now. However some random "batty" chick decides that wants to "see the manager" to remind them "She was first in line outside at 7:00." NOT f^%kin' cool. EVERYONE within earshot from the ushers, to the concession stand folks, to the clean up crew, she was making it known to (in a round about way) that we were skipping the line (which technically we were but eh). I laughed thinking, "It's a freaking empty theater, you have seats on reserve that we're taking up from you? Please let me know." I wanted to go to the concession stand to buy her a large cold soda, cause man, she was THIRSTY! The doors open and she off scrambling like it was a free iPhone in every seat boy! Damn, it be some grown ass silly folks, not the kids you gotta watch. Now finally, on to the movie review.
Long story short, the Dark Knight is a hodge podge of some of the best movies that have come along in the last ten years done better. A bit of "Heat" mixed in with a dash of "Seven" added with a little "Mission Impossible"/"James Bond" then topped off with some elements of "Fight Club." It's just Batman & the Joker as the main character focused on. Reason one why this film worked for me was that, it was staged at real locations, and not on some imagined set to look "cartoonish." Remember, Bruce Wayne HAS no real super powers, nor does any on his villains so placing him in the "real" world makes logical sense. Dude is a straight up regular (extremely rich) guy, that works out and is trained in many forms of combat. But hey, even the biggest dudes get f#@k up sometimes too (which Batman does in the movie). I don't wanna spoil anything for you guys but kudos to the whole production team on pulling this together. Every action in the storyline plot has a reaction and purpose that pushes the narrative forward. Matter o' fact I dug it so much I saw it TWICE already. Man, I'm not sure how they're gonna top this one (the hype, the acting, the box-office intake) but I'm curious to find out. Fingers crossed for Frank Miller's "Dark Knight Returns" to make it to the big screen. I'll purchase my tickets NOW! Thank you very much. BELIEVE THE HYPE! Good Knight Gothemites!

"BK Shows PDA For JL" -John Legend at Wingate Park

Okay...Surprise! Surprise! Word around the "colored folks water cooler" is that the (John) Legend himself is the big mystery (?) guest appearing at Wingate Park's live music concert series tonight. The other rumored guest to appear is the other John, as in Mayer which would be a first for both. Either way, I strongly suggest that you come EARLY, w/ a comfy blanket on hand. Some sorta of beverage to avoid dehydration, and some really good binoculars. Shows usual start at 7pm so be out there by 5 (lol)!

"We On A World Tour W/Obama My Man..." -'Bama Rolling To Iraq

Out to prove to the general public of American voters that he really is an "International Lover" Obama has set this campaign sights to boosting this image on foreign policies (and to taste some authentic ethnic food lol). Novelty t-shirts with the quote "I'm A Fan of the Brown Man" are highly sought after souvenirs being sold abroad to help fund his tour. Spots he's stated to appear in, and what he plans on hitting up while there are as follows; Germany (the beer), France (the fries) Jordan (the sneakers), Israel & Iraq (a good bomb shelter), West Bank (the ATM), Afghanistan (the scarfs) and Britain (fish, chips, and tea). In the fall, when he returns to the States and is asked to write an essay on "What I did for the Summer", he'll be more than prepared to answer in 5pgs or more.

"Bombs Over Brooklyn" -City's Pigeon Fine Is For the Birds

In reaction to the "Feed a Pigeon, Breed a Rat" campaign the City is heavily promoting. And the recent announcement that there will be a hefty fine given if a human is caught feeding the birds, let alone socializing with one. Radical right wing pigeon militants (H.O.T. Wings) have taken their fight to the streets (or rather air) to voice opposition to the City's decision. Here are some excepts from a letter sent (via carrier pigeon) to the press expressing their stance on the issue:

"Food out here on the streets, let alone GOOD food, is hard enough to come by for us as is! Trust me, we despise those garbage grubbing rats just as much, but this new law is downright discrimination! If we cannot eat and live comfortably nether will you! Random acts of bird droppings will rise dramatically until this law is revoked. Nothing...I mean NOTHING will be safe! Your homes, yours cars, your playgrounds and parks. Your little league soccer games, outdoor concerts, picnics and yes even your breakfast bagels and expensive Mermaid logo coffee you so badly crave in the morning. ALL will be targets of our attacks! If you've never stood up for something, do not fall for this!"
Signed "Ruffled Feathers"
H.O.T. Wings Leader

P.S. We are wise to your "exploding" rice and poisoned bread crumb tricks.

The NYPD and City officials usually tend to ignore empty hostile threats from such like groups, but when they saw the attached photo, especially the one in the beret, they knew that they meant business. That "morning bagel" reference was enough to scare me man.

"Put Ya (Bat) Lighters Up!"-NYC Goes Batty

In an effort to deter the growing surge of crime that seems to be currently gripping the NYC Tri-State area, the City has desperately turned to installing a "Bat-Signal" hoping to decrease criminal activity at night. When questioning a spokesperson about the decision behind the move he simply stated "Hey, we were figuring if it worked for Gotham then why wouldn't it work for us here?" When I informed him that there was no existing city named Gotham, still in disbelief he asked "Then you tell me where Batman's been catching all these bad guys smart ass huh?" I just shook my head and replied "Hey, whatever makes you feel safe at night pal." Shame, just more taxpayers dollars gone to waste.

"It's the Real(ness) World" - I'm A 80's/'90's Baby

As if the Summer wasn't hot ALREADY, Keistar Productions returns w/ yet another collabo between DJ Spinna & DJ Scratch (of EPMD) for their '80's/'90's theme party series currently hosted at Club Element on the Lower East Side. What makes this one a bit of a must attend is that Keita (Keistar's founder) will be celebrating her B'day that night as well. I've already RSVP'd for this one...a year ago. I'm hoping after you read this you'll follow suit and hit them up to attend too. It'll be just more proof on how BANANAS the Aug. 9th event "Rock the Block BK" will be! *Btw, if possible their asking that if you DO decide to attend, could you please dress as if you never updated your wardrobe from '89-'92. LOL!
